Three Motorsports Betting Predictions for 2018

05 January 2018

2017 was a thrilling year in motorsport: Lewis Hamilton landed his fourth F1 Drivers’ Championship; Lucas Di Grasi won his first title in the burgeoning discipline of Formula E; Martin Truex Jnr won his maiden NASCAR Cup Series championship. There was plenty of drama and excitement, yet it left plenty of questions left hanging over manufacturers and drivers alike.

2018 will undoubtedly be another great year for motor racing enthusiasts. We will see Jimmy Johnson hunt down that elusive eighth NASCAR title, which would see him overtake legends Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty. Hamilton too will be chasing down a legend as he tries to equal Juan Manuel Fangio’s five F1 titles. There will be plenty of subplots to whet the appetite of fans.

Red Bull to win the Constructors’ Championship in Formula 1: 5/2

It is tempting to take Hamilton at a price of 11/10 to win the Drivers’ Championship, but more value may lie in Red Bull winning the Constructors’ title. Engine issues have caused havoc with Red Bull’s chances in recent seasons, causing their drivers – Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen – to retire in a combined 13 races last season. Compare that to Mercedes, who only once saw a car fail to complete a race.

The feeling among the drivers however, is that Red Bull may have sorted those issues. They have the speed and power, and they have the drivers. If they can improve the reliability of the car, they will make a massive improvement on last year’s 3rd place finish, perhaps even wresting away Mercedes’ title.

The Formula 1 season will start on 25th March with the Australian Grand Prix.

Simon Pagenaud to win the 2018 IndyCar Series: 7/2

With four different champions in the last four years, IndyCar is arguably the most competitive of professional motor sports right now. Josef Newgarden pipped Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud to the title last season after winning three of the last six races. Pagenaud, who won the Championship in 2016, will have high hopes of getting it back however.

In truth, there is little to choose between the two Penske drivers, with both available at a price of 7/2. Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) is the current favourite at 3/1, but this looks a little too short for a driver who won only one race last year.

The IndyCar Series 2018 will start on 11th March in St Petersburg, Russia

Martin Truex Jnr to win 2018 NASCAR Cup Series: 7/2

The romantics will want to see Jimmy Johnson get his hands on that eighth title, and you can find him at odds of 16/1 to do so, but it seems that the smart money will go on Truex Jnr winning his second title. He won four of the final 10 races last season, displaying an incredible level of consistency to earn his first NASCAR Cup Series victory.

Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson also look they will do well throughout the season, but the experience of Truex Jnr and the consistency of his Toyota may just win out in the end.

The Daytona 500 will open the NASCAR Cup Series season on 18th February
