Charlotte Motor Speedway and NASCAR Partner with ByMGM and FanDuel

Two more partnership agreements for North Carolina sports betting sites were announced on Friday, bringing the total number made public so far to six. DraftKings secured an access deal with NASCAR, while ByMGM reached an agreement with Charlotte Motor Speedway. Both deals are pending approval of the operators' sports wagering license applications by the North Carolina State Lottery Commission.

DraftKings and ByMGM were among seven applicants that submitted completed license applications by the commission's recommended deadline of December 27th. Meeting that deadline makes operators eligible to start taking online wagers on the first day North Carolina online sports wagering launches, expected to be in March 2024.

DraftKings-NASCAR Deal Offers Fan Engagement Opportunities

The deal with NASCAR designates DraftKings as the racing body's exclusive daily fantasy sports partner in the U.S. and Canada. DraftKings will also become an authorized NASCAR gaming operator. "DraftKings has a proven track record of enhancing the fan experience across sports," said Joe Solosky, NASCAR's managing director of sports wagering. "We are thrilled to continue working with DraftKings to deliver NASCAR fans more engagement opportunities."

ByMGM Brings Innovative Sports Wagering to Iconic Speedway

Charlotte Motor Speedway executive Greg Walter called ByMGM "a signature source for sports wagering" with successful partnerships in other major professional sports. "With Charlotte Motor Speedway’s history of innovation, we wanted to move forward into this new era of sports entertainment with a progressive sportsbook," Walter said. "This partnership with ByMGM will bring sports fans new ways to enjoy their favorite events."

Who Remains Available for Sports Wagering Deals?

North Carolina passed a sports wagering law in June 2022 requiring operators to partner with a major professional team, NASCAR track, or golf course hosting a PGA Tour event. Some operators have criticized this requirement as a costly barrier to entry. Previous deals were struck between by365 and the Charlotte Hornets, FanDuel and the PGA Tour, Fanatics and the Carolina Panthers, and ESPN BY with Quail Hollow Club.

Underdog Sports is the only remaining applicant that hasn't announced a partner. Caesars also applied for a license and has access through its partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians casino. Other eligible partners include the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte FC soccer club, North Carolina Courage women’s soccer team, North Wilkesboro Speedway, and Sedgefield Country Club.

While the lottery commission continues to accept license applications, approval by the March launch date cannot be guaranteed for late applicants. With six high-profile deals secured and more partnerships possible, momentum continues building as North Carolina prepares to launch legal online sports wagering.
