Will Anyone Stop Lewis Hamilton This Year?

-

We love Formula One as much as the next person but even we have to admit that there has been one name dominating the sport of late.

It's not that we don't appreciate him either; what we do wonder though is will anyone stop Lewis Hamilton this year?

Stating the bleedin' obvious

We'll kick off our look at whether or not anyone can stop Lewis Hamilton this year with a quick look at some pretty clear factors. Hamilton already knows that he's the best driver out on the track and, whilst you can dispute the claim, there is plenty of evidence out there that would support the Brits claim - if he were to voice it.

Hamilton already holds a sickening amount of F1 records and victory this season will see him eclipse Michael Schumacher as the clear leader for the number of World Championship wins; for those who are less up with their figures, the legendary duo are currently tied on seven. With that considered, there is nobody competing with him that can rival his experience of getting the job done.

That will give Hamilton a big shot of confidence if things are tight as the campaign progresses; he’s capable of being one of the best defensive drivers when he’s out in front as well.

So, will anyone stop Lewis Hamilton this season?

Okay, we've mentioned the fact the Hamilton is a) experienced in winning and b) in possession of extreme confidence. Right now, Hamilton is to F1 what Michael Jordan is to the NBA. Not only one of the best shooting guards of all time – you can visit the TwinSpires Edge for the full list – but overall the top player when anyone thinks of that sport.

While others might still compare Hamilton with Schumacher, he keeps breaking records and proving haters wrong.

The good news for the neutrals amongst us is that it's not all about Hamilton. That would have been tough to believe after a few races with Hamilton winning three of the first four and finishing second in the other.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen has been trading blows with the Mercedes man though. In fact, after Hamilton had to pit twice at Monaco, Verstappen was actually able to open up a lead - a very slim one admittedly - in the standings courtesy of his race win.

It was his second victory of the season and means that, as of the time of writing, the Dutchman has only missed out on the podium once; that was in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix when he suffered a late crash when he looked nailed on to win.

It's not all rosy in the anti-Hamilton camp though. The season is only six races old and already it looks like a two horse race in both the drivers and constructors championships.

What could cost Hamilton?

In addition to Verstappen, who is at least giving Hamilton a run for his money at the moment, and his raw talent there are other factors that could see Hamilton fall short of breaking Schumacher's record.

The most obvious thing to consider is the car itself; there have already been concerns raised over Mercedes performance on certain tracks - take Monaco and Baku as examples - whilst Toto Wolff and Hamilton have acknowledged the annoyance of a 'finger issue' come 'magic brake' fault that caused further problems in Baku.

The other big obstacle facing Hamilton is himself; it’s not a likely occurrence but, assuming he gets back on top of the standings, a risk of complacency could well creep in particularly if he takes back first place without hitting his best form.

If he takes his eye off the ball, which you could potentially claim he did at Baku, then it will leave the door open to his title rival.

So, there you have it, our view on whether anyone will be able to stop Lewis Hamilton this year. Even with the fact he’s trailing Verstappen right now, it still looks like it will be his Championship to lose.
