Welcome to the RSC Formula 1 gallery. We have decided to include a part of F1 story into Racing Sports Cars gallery because we really think that 1970s were really interesting period in F1 history, the cars looked pretty good and elegant, and the races weren't just one or two men battles but it was still pure racing. We decided to start with 1970 season for various reasons. First, it was the first year of the decade when Formula One did great changes regarding the cars design. Car shapes did evolve quickly over the 1970-1972 period, from the cigars through wedges and coke bottles to the classic dart shapes of the mid-decade, and it is interesting to follow that development.

The 1970 was the season when many new talented drivers, that would play a significant role in seasons to come, made their debut, most notably Ronnie Peterson, Francois Cevert, Clay Regazzoni or Emerson Fittipaldi. And 1970 was also the year when some new manufacturers appeared on the scene. To name them, it is especially new March made by company founded in 1969 by four young talented men Max Mosley, Alan Rees, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd, then Team Surtees and also first Tyrrell 001 made its late season debut. Also traditional teams like Ferrari, Matra, McLaren, Brabham or Lotus, all made debut with cars that would play some role not only in 1970 but also following few seasons (312B series, MS120, M14A, BT33 and especially famous Lotus 72), so we really think that 1970 is a good point to start with. Moreover this season saw a great boost in numbers of starters compared to small grids in 1969 and major arrival of sponsorship was another characteristic of early 70s. This was another story that came to motorsport and particularly to Formula 1, and changed its face compared to first two decades of F1 racing.

The covered era ends with year 1982 that brought the last season of ground effect wing car formula. The rules for 1983 were changed very radically. The new cars with flat bottom looked quite different and with shortened rear overhangs and rear wings required to be placed higher and more close to rear axle, all cars lost most of their former elegance that they enjoyed throughout 1970s and in fact it was the year our attention moved from F1 to Group C sportscar racing. But that's another story and for more information, please, visit our RSC Photo Archive.
