RSC Touring Cars (1970-1988)

Welcome to the new RSC Touring Car photo gallery. After including top formula racing cars into RSC website in early 2005, we thought it would be interesting to cover also golden period of touring car racing within the Racing Sports Cars website. European Touring Car Championship, that was officially held from 1970 until 1988, had some better moments as well as some rather weak years but generally it was an interesting series that brought a lot of exciting endurance racing dramas and battles. Originally we indented to start with 1970 season as it was the first year of official launch of the European Championship but we were kindly provided with photos from earlier races, so that we will show also some races that preceeded official championship and that were part of European Touring Car Challenge, which started in 1963.

The championship was held until 1988 after an experiment convert it into the World Championship series in 1987. The new rules required entrance fee to get any championship points and it appeared to be a decision that finally led to boring entry lists, loss of interest among many private teams and it simply didn't work for the championship. The former diversity of the field was almost gone. Apart from the largest Division 3, where just Fords were competitive though, the rest of the field was almost plain, formed by BMW M3s in Division 2 and by Toyotas Corolla in Division 1.
